5001: A LONG RIDE FOR HORSE HEALTH

I am Long Rider Chris MacLuckie. With honor I once again set off on my trusty Morgan mare Roxy to set an example of working horse health.

Long ride 5001 begins in the Guatemalan Highlands followed by a year long tour through horse-loving Mexico.

This time, I will be riding less each day and month to make time for sharing more horse videos, interviews, and stories both online and with my hosts.

Throughout my trip I look forward to offering presentations with my hosts. I will cover 4 topics:

  1. How to travel down the road successfully
  2. Fitting a saddle that can hold gear and is comfortable for both horse and rider
  3. Hoof care (barefoot and easyboot)
  4. How feed affects health and especially foot health.

Keep up to date with our mission here, and on Facebook, Instagram, YouTube and Soundcloud.

LET’S RIDE!!!

Our ride beneficiary and partners

We ride for the Grupo Ecuestre. We ride with the Federación de Calbagantes. Roxy is cared for by Dr. J. Concho Hernandez Ramirez. And I am guided by The Long Riders Guild.

We mutually share a love and respect for the horse.
We humbly dedicate ourselves to improving our ability to care for our animals, and to share best practices.

Together we are 5001, a long ride for horse health.

New Year, New Ride Update

I decided in late October I was going to go back on the road. In early December I got serious about it and approached different individuals, groups and organizations to see if they wanted to partner up for this next epic ride. I've been working hard at this and some...

We LOVE Our Myler Combination Bit

I really like my combo bit from Myler. After talking with Dale Myler in July 2017, I made the plunge and bought the best. Although it looks complicated and harsh, it's actually very easy on Roxy. Before our trip,  all the Roxs wanted to do was RUN... Bitless was out...

5001 training STARTS NOW!!!

Stay tuned for our upcoming ride: 5001, a long ride for horse health. This is Day 1 of training!!! Our program for the next 3 months will include lots of hill walking (for me!) and 3 rides a week in the saddle. https://youtu.be/00KXaHSFRns   I accompanied my old...

Audio: End of one road; the beginning of another

For almost 2 years I put my focus on raising funds for Maya Pedal. That effort has now come to an end. To better manifest my future projects, my attention is now strictly on horses, specifically working and performance horse health. I thank all of the people who...

Comfort for horse and rider

What I'm about to say is worth THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS. It's the most IMPORTANT THING FROM MY TRIP: Fitting a saddle for both horse and rider is never easy. Doing it for a 5000 mile long ride with extra weight from saddle bags, IS TOTALLY DIFFERENT. THIS IS HOW WE DID...

Audio: Mad Barn Supplements Worked for Us!

Mad Barn Supplements Worked For Us! We used a custom Mad Barn product for 9 of the 13 months we rode from Canada to Guatemala in 2017 and 2018.  www.madbarn.com Last December Scott made us a custom product that was highly concentrated. I asked for a mix specifcally...

Thank You

I want to thank everyone I came into contact with during the 5000 miles of hope solo horse ride from Canada to Guatemala. Even the people I wish I had never met. Because it's ALL the influences -good, bad, and crazy- that helped shape the outcome of our journey. How I...

I decided to go on another trip back to Mexico for a couple fundamental reasons.

I wanted to finish my ride with a bang and to do that I needed to focus 100% on horses. For me and several other Long Riders, México is the Mecca of horse riding. As I successfully completed 1 long ride, what better way to celebrate doing another long ride than doing it in the country where they do more horse rides than anywhere else in the world?

Mexico IS horses, and I look forward to sharing what I know about horse travel with the Mexicans I meet as well as with the world via this site and my books.
