I want to start by thanking everyone who ordered, read, shared and was part of our campaign.
In terms of raising funds for printing professional photo books of our yearlong journey by horse we did not succeed.
HOWEVER, the campaign was super successful in terms of spreading the 5000 Miles of Hope message and mission. There is a LOT of online momentum from this so we are going to work with that -with gratitude!!!
I knew 1 day into the campaign we weren’t going to reach the project goal, but I had to keep at it.
I asked myself that first week: how do I want to go forward with the books if I can’t raise the funds to print them? I thought about which of the 2 books I would rather write in these circumstances. As I’m leaving shortly on a second long ride, and I’m going to be giving presentations throughout regarding how to do a long ride, it only makes sense to finish THE ESSENTIAL GUIDE TO SOLO HORSE TRAVEL. But do I have the resources to print it? And even if I do, how do I ship the book cheaply to countries other than the USA?
It became clear that the ebook format was the way to go.
A whole new world instantly opened up, in terms of simplicity and reduced headaches. I mean, I’m in a foreign country and I’m about to head out on the road into another country. Not having to deal with a publisher, printer and international shipping sounds great!
Next, I looked into formats for the ebooks and realized for my image rich books I wanted to use fixed format PDF. Once that was decided I realized Amazon was out of the picture as they don’t do PDF. But PDF is the only format that can be easily read on ALL devices so that’s where I was going to focus. So no Amazon market meant I would need to make a store for my website and for FB.
Which ecommerce portal to use was my next question. This is what I’m working on these days… For me what was vital was that the checkout automatically translates into the language of the viewer, and that it is simple, sleek and usable on both my site and on social media. So far, it looks like I’m going to use Sendowl. They offer the best range of features I am looking for.
As far as product and content creation, I am going to start with a focus on ebooks in English and Spanish.
In the fall and winter I was looking at making a membership type website a la Patreon, etc, but I am veering away from that for the following key reason:
Membership sites are a lot of work. That’s not the problem. Offering consistent content month in month out while I’m on the road travelling by horse is the problem. I can’t guarantee I will always have good internet or spare time, so I don’t want to disappoint members.
As my rules for travelling down the road are:
1. Roxy first
2. Then me
3. Then my hosts
4. Then social media (and content creation)
You can see I don’t prioritize content creation above the more essential components to successful horse travel. Social time and content creation is the icing on the cake. The others ARE the cake.
In the last couple weeks it all came together for me.
I realized the best way for me to ride AND write is to focus on short, medium, and full length digital files. I can make them well when I have the time and roll them out on an ongoing basis. I’m REALLY excited about this – I have a BUNCH of book and media ideas!
