Most of the horses I’ve seen in Guatemala have been work horses. A cargo/ riding hybrid.
We used a custom Mad Barn product for 9 of the 13 months we rode from Canada to Guatemala.
As we went upwards out of the coastal lowlands we found cooler weather. The countryside was nice but it was still rather scarce horse wise. I had a fun few days out of the heat.
This post is for the people who have no clue how I’m caring for Roxy. Those who assume I’m overusing her or abusing her. It’s also for the curious and interested.
We are riding a 5000 mile unassisted solo horse ríde. We ride 15-30 miles a day, 20 days a month, in areas I’ve ever never been before. We occasionally get resupplies along the way. Our 850 lb horse carries rider and load totalling 245lbs-255lbs with full winter load.
I first realized I would need to supplement feeding in October, about a month into the ride. I researched the best concentrates and ended up buying msm, mag oxide and curcumin. This lasted 3 months. I wasn’t sure how well it was working, so I the decided to get something made professionally. A concentrate for specifically for the hooves, joints and digestion.
Here are some pics from our travels down Hwy 3 on the east side of Lake Ontario.
On Sunday I left Sackets harbor and we made it to south of Mexico on Wednesday, where I’m staying with some old dog mushing friends.
It’s been a pretty sweet journey so far. Roxy and I are both doing well and we have met lots of great people along the way.
